Hashlech

The Dubno Maggid tells the story of a man who once hitched a ride on a wagon and climbed aboard with his heavy pack. But even as the wagon rolled smoothly along the road, he continued to clutch the bundle on his shoulders, beads of sweat lining his brow. The wagon driver turned and asked, “Why don’t you place your load down?” The man replied, “I don’t want to trouble the horse more than I already am. I’ll carry it myself.” The driver laughed gently. “Foolish man. Do you think your burden isn’t already being carried? Whether it’s on your back or lying on the floor of the wagon, it’s all being pulled just the same.”

We often carry our troubles like heavy bags, thinking that if we just hold on tightly and rely on our own strength, we will be in control. Yet the deeper truth is that our burdens are already carried by the One who knows us best - “Hashlech al Hashem yehavcha..."
